...Is this thing on?...

It's a strange little world I live in, but I like it.

5/14/13 12:23 pm - In defense of fanfic: further reading

These articles are eloquent, and offer much better perspectives on fanfiction than the whiny, "no, MINE!" entitled bullshit of the anti-fanfic sort.

5/14/13 10:08 am - A very good rebuttal to the "traditional marriage" bullshit.

I was going through my old Bookmarks - which I do from time to time, just to catch up with my reading - and I rediscovered a very good article.

10/16/12 07:02 am - This shit be crazy.

Pro-life?! Pro-life my ass.

Some "people" - and I use that term only insofar as these creatures happen to be physically humaniod - should be culled from the population ASAP. I don't care how, I just want this kind of hypocritical scum stone DEAD.

8/11/12 07:14 pm - Too funny not to share...

This is just classic

I didn't write this, but this is *normal* in America and I'm helping it go viral. Personally, I've done without needed medication, risking long term damage to my body, because I couldn't afford to refill a prescription. I don't have eyeglasses, although I should, because I can make do without them as long as I get into the front row in my classroom. I self-treat my injuries; fortunately, I'm knowledgeable enough to do it right. Most people don't have that advantage.
We deserve better than this. A century ago, medicine was crap and so health care spending was optional, as you might be better off without a doctor. These days, we have amazing technology and yet many people die because they cannot afford treatment.

(Post originally seen in this post by ramblin_phyl . I have been notified that it was originally posted by suricattus in her journal post. The story and words are hers, but I do believe that it needs to go viral and that as many people as possible need to get their stories out there. Only by making a noise about this can we make a change in our society.)

There is a move afoot in the nation -driven by the GOP - to repeal the new health care laws, to protect corporate interests, to defend against fear-mongering (and stupid) cries of "socialism!", and to ensure that people are forced to choose between keeping a roof over their heads or getting necessary health care.

This movement is killing people.

Think I'm overstating the fact?

Ask the friends and family of writer/reviewer Melissa Mia Hall, who died of a heart attack last week because she was so terrified of medical bills, she didn't go see a doctor who could have saved her life.

From another writer friend: One person. Not the only one. That could have been me. Yeah, I have access to insurance -- I live in New York City, which is freelancer-friendly, and have access to freelancer advocacy groups. Through them, I can pay over $400/month ($5,760/year) as a single, healthy woman, so that if I go to the hospital I'm not driven to bankruptcy. But a doctor's appointment - a routine physical - can still cost me several hundred dollars each visit. So unless something's terribly wrong? I won't go.

My husband worked for the government for 30 years. We have government employee (retired) insurance. It is the only thing of value he took away from that job. His pension is pitiful. He still works part time. My writing income has diminished drastically. Our combined income is now less than what it was before T retired fifteen years ago. Inflation has diminished it further. In the last 30 days I have racked up over $8000 in medical bills for tests and the beginning of treatment. Our co-pay is 20% after the deductible. And there is more to come. Our savings are already gone. I have the gold standard of insurance and I still can't pay all the medical bills.

Another friend lost her insurance when her husband lost his job. She couldn't afford medication and ended up bed ridden for three months at the end of over a year of no job and therefore no insurance until he found work again.

It's our responsibility. All of us, together. As a nation.

EtA: Nobody is trying to put insurance companies out of business. They will always be able to offer a better plan for a premium. We simply want to ensure that every citizen - from infant to senior citizen - doesn't have to choose between medical care, and keeping a roof over their heads, or having enough to eat.

We're trying to get this to go viral. Pass it along.

I'm going to post my story as the first comment to this post if anyone would like to read it. If anyone wants to tell their story, please tell it on your own journal and post a link in the comments. Maybe, just maybe, TPTB will listen to the slaves peons who clean their toilets before they have to clean their own.

Join us in standing up for reproductive health and education. Planned Parenthood, the organization that delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, has come under fire in the U.S. lately, with many politicians on both state and federal level seeking to end funding (and in a few cases succeeding).

During the month of May, you can send a specially designed Planned Parenthood vgift to your friends to help support this cause. (And if you need someone to send it to, frank is always happy to receive gifts!) There are three variations ($1, $5 and $10) for you to choose from, but they'd all look good on your profile when your friends know that you stand by something so important.

Thank you all for your help in our support for Planned Parenthood. This promotion ends June 1, 2012; LiveJournal is not affiliated with Parent Parenthood. For more information about Planned Parenthood, please visit: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/

[Some one actually created a bill about this? Forget about sexism for a second... In a world with teenage pregnancies and overpopulation, hunger, famine, high unemployment, and bone crushing poverty? Are they frigging insane? If I lived in Arizona, I'd do a lot more than sign a petition. I'd find a way to boot that man out of office. Maybe tar and feather him and ride him out on a rail, like they did back in Mark Twain's day.

I am beginning to worry about the West, whatever happened to that libertarian spirit you were so found of? No government involvement. My ass. What are you guys smoking out there in Arizona? I'm also wondering about other sections of my country. This is what happens when people aren't educated. Maybe we should make every man who runs for legislative office take an intelligence test first?]

I just signed the following petition addressed to: Arizona Sentate, Arizona State Legislature, Debbie Lesko.

----------------
Stop the Arizona birth control Bill

If this bill passes the senate then women of Arizona would be forced to provide documentation that birth control is for medical purposes only. The "company" would not be required to cover birth control if it was for prevention of conception. Additionally this bill would give companies the right to fire women if they discovered that she was using a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Black March - Thursday March 1st 2012 to Saturday March 31st 2012 With the continuing campaigns for internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites like Megaupload under allegations of 'piracy' and 'conspiracy' the time has come to take a stand against music, film, and media companies' lobbyists. The only way is to hit them where it hurts. Their profit margins. March 2012 is the end of the First Quarter in economic reports world wide. Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine. Wait the four weeks to buy them in April: see a film later, etc... Holding out for just four weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media companies profits for the first quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments world wide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes. This action will give a statement of intent: "We will not tolerate the Media Industries' lobbying for legislation that will censor the internet."
Original image and campaign source: reddit.

Edited to add my own thoughts (not part of the original reddit call for action) And if you do not feel like taking a total break and perhaps want just a trial separation or couple's counseling, then perhaps consider Black March Lite 2.0 = spend, but spend money on those content creators and independent retailers who came out against SOPA/PIPA.  And tell them why you're buying their products in March.  There are many of them.

And for those who favor the more targeted boycott, you can find info  here.  But no matter which,  you can participate and you can tailor your level of participation.  We have the tools, the will and the strength to take a stand.

1/22/12 05:32 pm - Why SOPA is dangerous, an explanation of the bill

Originally posted by nyxmidnight at Why SOPA is dangerous, an explanation of the bill
Why SOPA is dangerous
To Sum Up
SOPA:
  • Gives the government the right to unilaterally censor foreign websites.
  • Gives copyright holders the right to issue economic takedowns and bring lawsuits against website owners and operators, if those websites have features that make it possible to post infringing content. [A comment feature is enough.]
  • Makes it a felony offense to post a copyrighted song or video.

This bill turns us all into criminals. If it passes, then you either stop using the Internet, or you simply hope that you never end up in the crosshairs, because if you’re targeted, you will be destroyed by this bill. You don’t have to be a big, mean, nasty criminal — common Internet usage is effectively criminalized under this law. This bill will kill American innovation and development of the Internet, as it will become too risky to do anything of value. It is toxic and dangerous, and should not, under any circumstances, be supported.

12/3/09 11:43 pm - Let us now speak of talentless, overrated hacks.

No, not Stephanie Meyer; I've had more than enough of that moronic, pathetic, boring, overstuffed, pompous, thoroughly unpleasant little twerp to last me three lifetimes.

No, what we are discussing here is James Cameron, and his derivative heap of bullshit that he had the supreme gall to call Avatar. Now, it's not the title itself that annoys me - it fits with the premise, stupid and hopelessly overdone as it is, and at least let's the viewer know what they're in for - what pisses me off is the fact that Jamie-boy and his studio fucks tried to copyright the title of the movie.

They tried to copyright a title. Legally, this should have been impossible; the judge and jury should have laughed this case out of court, publicly mocked whatever dumbass brought the case before them in the first place, and spit in James Ca-moron's face for good measure. But, somehow they actually managed to win; from this, I can only conclude that one of them had some serious blackmail material on various members of the jury or possibly even the judge, or Jamie-boy sucked a lot of dicks before the proceedings.

Now, far be it from me to actually say that someone deserves to be violently gang-raped by distempered bulls, then repeatedly sodomized with Samehada; but... well, there you go.

Jamie-boy, you are a stupid, worthless, talentless, overrated cretin, and I am personally mortified that I ever enjoyed any of your work.

Ha ha! I've done it! It's ready! Now everything in my journal fits in with the theme. :D

11/12/09 06:51 pm

I swear to fucking God, if I see one more of those insipid "Get Ripped Quick" or "I'm Crazy Ripped" ads, I'm going to find a way to leap into the computer, travel down the wired like Servo, and into the home of whatever moronic, annoying retard thought that those were a good idea in any way. Then I shall proceed to rip out their intestines and lynch the little cretin with them.

10/28/09 04:12 am

Well, now I have 24 articles up on my Wikia Wiki; most of them having to do with Guyver, but as that's my fandom of the moment, I'm not going to trouble myself too

10/10/09 11:50 pm - Wikia Progress Update

Well, so far, I have 18 articles up on my new Wiki - though I still don't have any help with writing it, in spite of my best efforts - so, that's something, at least.

8/9/09 04:22 pm - We're Live and Online!!

I've just finished writing up three of what I hope will be a lot of articles on my new Multiversal Fandom Fanon Wiki. I hope some of you guys out there see fit to contribute, too.

8/9/09 01:53 pm

Oh, this is just fucking wonderful. You know why they make 'upgrades' for places like Invision Power Board? So they have something to fob off on the desperately stupid for their own sadistic amusment. I don't think I'll be heading down to Japan Legend for a couple days, at least.

Ye gods, it's like all the things I despise most in a website have all decided to get together and breed.

7/20/09 12:14 am - Junji Ito's greatest (sic) hits

5/13/09 03:39 pm

Well, I've gotten five rows filled now. :D It'll still be a fair amount of time before I can actually use my mood theme, but it's coming along nicely.

In other news, the second instalment of Meeting Places has been sent off to my beta, so I should have it back within about a month or so.

4/28/09 09:12 pm - Reflections on 'Twilight'...

I've been thinking on and off about this, and I've realized that the name of the first book, and by extension the series, is deeply apropriate. After all, everyone involved is astonishingly dim.

4/24/09 10:33 pm

So, as I was going through my collection of bookmarked Livejournal entries - pruning the deadwood, as it were - and I stumbled across an animated icon for Naruto. Not much of it stuck with me, but the line "Feel Pain" has spawned mental images that I feel I need to share:

-Pain says that line.
-One of his fellow Akatsuki members (whichever would be funniest) gropes his butt.
-Pain shouts "That's not what I meant!"

4/17/09 04:32 pm - Progress! (of a sort).

Well, I've gotten two whole rows filled in the mood theme that I'm working on. It's going to take a bit more work to get them all, but there's at least an end in sight now. :D This pleases me.

3/25/09 02:50 pm - Writing status: glee!

Well, as of last night, I have posted the first parts of the third story in my Guyver fanfic series: Meeting Places.

Read and enjoy. :D

3/11/09 10:11 pm - Black hole head... killer hair... SNAIL PEOPLE!

I don't know what's wrong with me... I man, the manga itself is both utterly horrifying and ends on a note of profound and utter hopelessness, but for all that I just can't seem to stop reading it.

Expirence the horror for yourself.

I'm reading it again even as I post this... Spirals creep me out a litte now...
